Finally...

For most of my life I have been attempting to take 'artsy' photographs with crap cameras.

Starting all the way back in 1983 with my state of the art Kodak Disc Camera.

It was happening. But you couldn't do close ups. Or any form of zoom. Or...pretty much anything..other than point & shoot & hope you could actually recognize what was in the picture in the first place.

But that didn't stop me from taking dozens & dozens of photos of flowers, trees, the sky, landscapes etc.

I even managed to get a few good ones.

And then I moved on to various 35mm. None of them anything other than mass produced cheapos.

No zoom. No tele-photo. No nothings.

At the turn of century we went high tech & got our first digital camera. At the time it was pretty cool. But it didn't take long for it to be antiquated & out of date.

We upgraded to a newer more powerful digital with about twice as many pixels as the first one & this one actually had a zoom button.

But it was still pretty sad.

I have taken many, many pictures with it over the years. Including almost every one on this blog. I've taken many that I really, really, like.

Yet, I missed so many others. Long distance shots of the amazing wildlife in the high desert. The oh-so-sweet brand new baby feet photo I wanted so badly after my last was born. But my camera didn't do close ups & they were just fuzzy & indistinct :(

Knowing the desires of my heart my fabulous man gave me an Olympus E-PL1 for Christmas. Now for many of you with super duper uber cameras that still might seem pretty sad. But to me it is a life long dream.

At last, a grown up camera with lenses ~ did you catch that plural (meaning more than one)? With the ability to zoom in and do telephoto.

I am a very happy camper.

Now, it still doesn't have a mega-3-miles-away-flea-on-a-dogs-back telephoto but it is pretty awesome.

I spent about an hour today, outside, playing with the lenses & settings & seeing what that baby can do.

I am stoked.

I still have hours & hours of manual reading & practicing to do before I even scratch the surface of what it can do but I am so pleased with what I already can do I could just, just...blog to the world about it :)

And you know one of the top bestest things about digital verses film cameras? (besides the totally obvious)

I CAN take 400 practice shots & it doesn't cost me $100 in film ;)

So, just because I know y'all are just dying to see my pretty pictures...I have a few to share

(look Beci! My first ever 'sun flare'!)

                                                                (isn't this one pretty?)

My Daddy

My daddy died this morning at 7:20.

Donald William Tschudin.

He was 82 years old.

He was born and raised in New Jersey.

He was a veteran of the Korean War. He never saw combat . He actually spent most of the war in Europe, something I always teased him about.

He had a massive stroke last Monday. We were able to go & see him last Wednesday.

It was the first time I had seen him in 6 years.

There is a long, sad story behind that but suffice to say it was due to sin nature. Isn't it always?

I don't know if he knew me but when I said " I love you Daddy" he said "Love you" back.

We went again on Friday & took all of the children. My 2 youngest had never met their grandpa.

We thought he was getting stronger but yesterday my oldest called to say he was fading.

No one in my family is saved.

It has been my constant prayer for many many years that my parents, my sisters & their families would be saved.

We went to see my dad especially hoping that he would be able to communicate to us that he was saved or wanted to be saved.

This morning he passed without me knowing where he was going.

My son sent me a message not long after saying that a few days ago my dad had been reciting the Lord's Prayer. I've never heard my daddy say a prayer.

It is my prayer that this was a sign that he had asked Jesus into his heart & that he is with the Lord right now.

It is also my prayer that this will open a door into the hearts of my family & they will be saved.

It is heart wrenching to think of my family not sharing in Eternal Life.

The alternative is horrifying.

Pray for your family, your friends, anyone you have ever met who is not saved. Don't sit idly by & let them be damned.

I love you Daddy.

Blessings.

Conversations in the truck...

Conversation with DP (5):

DP: "Mommy, when you were little were you taught that monkeys turned into people?"

Me: "yes"

DP: "That's a myth right?"

Me: "yes"

DP: "Lots of people still believe that right?"

Me:"yes"

DP: "They should read the Bible."

Me: "yes!"

Thanksgiving is coming...

Sure signs it's almost Thanksgiving at our house:

I have used 3 lbs of butter in the past 2 days.

The Kitchen Aid & the oven have been in constant use for the last 48 hours.

If it held still long enough it was dusted, vacuumed & mopped.

My 2 year stuck his head in the back door & gleefully announced " Hey Mom! The turkey is dead!"

Have a blessed day :)

Walk like an Egyptian

In our continuing study of Egypt this week we made costumes, ceremonial collars & pottery.

Today we had a traditional Egyptian meal.

We got everybody decked out in their Pharaoh Finery to take some photos & enjoy our meal.

The Royal Family

The meal: fish, flat bread, dried fruits, figs, dates & nuts.

And yes, those are Fig Newtons ;)

Our pottery.

We had lots of fun learning some new skills & we always enjoy trying new foods from different cultures. :)

15

Yesterday my second born turned 15.

Don't ask me how it happened because I have no idea.

He is not a little boy anymore.

He is as tall as his dad.

His pants are 29x36.

He got his braces last month.

He can drive (with confidence).

He got his first deer this year.

He is such a hard worker.

Thoughtful.

Generous.

Creative.

Silly.

For his birthday we got him a long-wanted welder. We found a fabulous deal on Craigslist. We got a welder, extra rod, gloves & the fancy automatic mask for less than the cost of the mask alone, new.

He is a happy camper. :)

He spent the day yesterday in the garage perfecting his technique.

And he made me the horse shoe towel holders I have been waiting 7 years for his dad to make ;)

He is awesome.

Happy Birthday to my Schmoo.

Thank you Lord for putting such an amazing young man in my life.

Blessings.

Naptime...

The other day I put my 2 yr old down for his nap.

All was quiet & still so I peaked my head around the corner expecting to see a sleeping bub.

Instead I saw this...

Maybe I  shouldn't have put him in his sister's room... ;)

School Days

As I have shared before, we use My Father's World curriculum.

This year we are in "Creation to the Greeks". We have been doing it now for about 2 months.

One of the best things about MFW is the many hands-on projects.

They really keep the kids interested & make learning fun.

We firmly believe learning should be as fun as you can make it. :)

So far this year we have experimented with the energy of light, built an Egyptian reed boat & several pyramids.

Wanna see? ;)

Learning about the power of the sun.

See the smoke? (and yes, I know you are jealous & wish YOU could do school in your Sponge Bob pj's)

Building the reed boat~ see it there  on the bottom step?

Testing to see if it floats. (I love this pic. Goats are very curious ;) )

Did you ever wonder how the pyramids were built? Probably not like this...

A step pyramid.

The Sphinx.

So that is some of what we have been doing in school... how about you?

Blessings.

Moving Day

Homestead Blogger is apparently closing up shop. :(
Not surprising due to how much of a mess it has been since switching to the dreaded WordPress.
But still sad.
So after a few days of panic, I finally (thanks to some cyber geek who boldly went before me & posted the instructions for the rest of us. Thank You!) managed to get my original blog to transfer over & away we go!
I've made a few changes ~including the name
That was a hard one but since we no longer live in my beloved high desert it just seemed like the thing to do.
So~ if you are moving with me Welcome!
And if you are new ~ I'll try not to bore you :)

Rosh Hoshanna

We are studying the Biblical feasts this year as part of school.

Yesterday was Rosh Hoshanna~ the Jewish new year.

Also known as the Feast of Trumpets.

We blew our shofer & had a special family meal.

We set the table with our best & said the prayers & followed the traditons.

My husband declared it as good as Thanksgiving ;).

(I love this one. Look at those faces! They had just been told they had to wait until everyone sat down)

We had tilapia  for our special dinner.

I didn't get any pics of the shofer blowing or the prayers but there's your glimpse into our Feast of Trumpets :)

Blessings.

Treasures

Wanna see my new toy?

For the last 25 years or so I have cut out donuts with a glass & a baby bottle.

Hey, it worked.

I always wanted an actual donut cutter but never came across one.

This summer while we were at family camp a couple friends & I snuck into town to go junking (some folks go 'antiquing' but on my budget it is definitely junking).

We stopped by this fabulous little junk store ~ that I have wanted to go in for years but we were always on our way somewhere else~ and it was going out of business!

The owner told us everything was 75% off.

The first thing I found was this awesome powder horn~ just the type of thing my son would drool over.

It  had a sale tag marking it down to $17.50 something. A really great price but since I had about $7 in my pocket it was out of my price range.

So I wandered around & looked at stuff & kept coming back to the powder horn...

Finally I took it over & asked the owner if that was the final price or was it 75% off of that.

He looked at it & says $4.50.

SOLD!

I couldn't get the money out fast enough :)

Then we all went outside to see what treasures were hanging out in the carport.

I found the donut cutters & these

just piled up on some tables.

I don't remember exactly what I paid for them but I know it was a handful of change ;)

It was a fabulous day .

And making donuts with an actual cutter is much funner than the cup/bottle routine. ;)

Blessings.

Awkward

Awkward situation #212:

So we had a visitor in church today.

A man & his 2 kids. I spoke to him briefly but never got his name.

After church my husband & a deacon & his wife disappear into his office for a confab.

I was totally out of the loop.

Afterward my hubby says "I should tell you before you hear it from someone else" ~which ranks right up there w/ "we need to talk"

So it turns out the guy is the ex-husband of a very good friend of ours who is also the deacons sister.

Not just a run-of-the-mill ex-husband but a walk-out-on-your-wife-and-6-kids ex-husband. While you were a pastor ex-husband. Because you were having an affair with a married member of your congregation ex-husband. A never-pay-child-support ex-husband. Who remarried, cranked out a couple more kids & then left that wife. Who happened to discover some interesting facts when she did some research on the ex-pastor ex-husband. He is a real true to life Lifetime Channel movie waiting to happen. A multiple families all over the place that don't know about each other kind of Lifetime movie. A pretty much every word out of his mouth has been a lie kind of movie.

So he was in our church today.

Yep.

And pretty muchly everybody knew about but me.

Why? You ask?

Because it was pretty much a general consensus that if I knew who he was I might scratch his eyes out.

Huh.

Who me?

I wouldn't have tho.

Because despite the agony & indignity he put my friend thru his leaving was that best thing that ever happened to her & her kids.

She is married to an awesome Godly man who loves her & loves her kids.

Her children have gotten to see how a MAN treats his wife & they have been able to know what a DAD is like.

So I am sorry for his other wives & for his other children but I don't want to scratch his eyes out.

I DO want to spray down his pew with lysol but that is another deal altogether...

Blessings.

Random Nothingness...

My 2 yr old has become enamored with his Puggle "pack pack". He carries it constantly.

My 5 yr old is obsessed with vacuuming. He wants to vacuum all day, every day. I am not complaining.

We did some ''home improvements" at church today. We ripped out about a dozen, half dead, overgrown, really hideous shrubs from the front of the church.

The plan is  to replace them with shrub roses which bloom all summer here.

But everybody agrees: even with nothing there but dirt~ it already looks much better! ;)

It was actually a fun process because one of the men brought his back hoe & he had those bushes ripped out & piled behind the church in no time flat.

Nothing like the right tool for the job :)

And then he gave everyone (including moi) back hoe driving lessons in the church field.

My boys loved that!

My friends all over the country are talking about cool nights, crisp days, fall in the air...

It's been over 100* here all week.

Sigh.

I miss fall. There is no fall here. (No matter what these poor delusional Californians might try to tell you).

It will just be hot, hot, hot & then one day it will start to rain & winter will be here.

Sigh.

I miss having seasons. (other than 'Fire" & "Rainy")

Still getting tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupes & of course cucumbers out of the garden.

Picked a bushel of onions this week.

We plan to chop & dehydrate those to have all winter.

Tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of September 11.

Doesn't seem possible.

And how sad is it that at the ceremonies tomorrow God will be completely, purposefully left out? :(

A sad, sad commentary on the state of our nation.

Blessings.

Safari Park

Last week we took a little mini-vacation & went up to Oregon for a few days.

While we were there we hit the Safari Park in Winston http://www.wildlifesafari.net/, visited fabulous friends in Clackamas & discovered to our great joy that there is now a Cabelas in Springfield :)

We stayed at a hotel with an indoor pool & the kids put that to use each night ;)

Our 5 year old started out the trip with a yucky cold (which of course only bothered him each night at bedtime :P ) & by the end of the trip he had passed it to his sister & then on to his brothers once we were home :(

I still feel like I need a vacation but at least this was a start.
