Bad Cow

For the last 4 years my cow has given us no real trouble at all. She has been very healthy, an easy keeper. She has more than made up for that over this past week. In the last 10 days she has had edema, mastitis, milk fever & ketosis . She was down for 24 hours & I wasn't sure if she was getting up again. For the edema & the mastitis, my husband was out of town & I was on my own. Thankfully, for the milk fever & the ketosis, he has been home & in charge. If I was still on my own I think I would have lost it .

Praise the Lord, she seems to be on the mend! She is on her feet, eating, drinking & giving good milk. Lord willing she will be fully recovered soon.

I also had quite a scare with the calf. She managed to get herself stuck on the ice on the pond. I found her when I went out to milk. It took me a while to drag her off the ice & into the barn. She's  heavy calf! She was chilled thru. My neighbor came over & helped me rub her dry. I set up a heat lamp & we worked on her for a few hours. I was very worried but she has made a full recovery. Praise the Lord some more! The only permanent damage seems to be in her attitude towards me . She won't let me anywhere near her now. Sigh. Wouldn't you think she would be grateful?

Weeks like this make me fantasize about living in a condominium some where with nothing to be responsible for. I could grow tomatoes on my balcony & live a life of ease. I would be bored stiff inside a week .

Life on the farm is never dull.

Unfortunately.

Blessings.

  1. Oh my goodness! All that and with a new baby in the house to nurse and love on! You must be exhausted - to say the least!!! I am glad you were able to save the calf...... oh my..... and all that while your husband was out of town... go figure, isnt't that always the case? :) I am sure the good Lord just looks over us and smiles, knowing full well why He created us to be "one"... because goodness knows men need a good wife and vice versa.

Hope you are settling in, and keeping warm and of course loving on that new baby of yours!

    God bless,

  2. I am so sorry. Was your cow board? Just teasing. It seams that when life is going good some critter makes a nice week or month right out the window. You had so much to do for her while hubby was gone. Then you save her, dry her off and watch her, now she is rude to you. Ugh. When my kids, grand-babies, critters are in a mood I Tell them I am going to tie their tails in a knot!! Maybe you should tell her that! God Bless, mj

  3. It probably would not take a week for you to become bored stiff! But it is nice to dream busy lady! I enjoyed your blog.
